August 25, 2026 — 35 Years of Linux
Today we celebrate 35 years of Linux — one of the most influential and important projects in the history of computing.
On August 25, 1991, a young Finnish student named Linus Torvalds announced that he was working on a new, free operating system kernel. What started as a personal project would eventually become the foundation of an enormous ecosystem powering everything from servers and smartphones to supercomputers, cloud platforms, networking equipment, embedded devices, and countless other systems.
🐧 From a Small Kernel to the World
Linux didn’t become successful because it was created by a single company or because of a massive marketing campaign.
It grew through open source collaboration.
Developers from around the world could study the source code, improve it, fix bugs, add features, and share their work with everyone else. Over the decades, this collaborative model helped Linux evolve into a powerful, reliable, and incredibly flexible operating system kernel.
Today, Linux is everywhere.
It powers a huge portion of the world’s servers and cloud infrastructure. It runs on supercomputers, routers, storage systems, IoT devices, development environments, containers, and much more.
And through Android, Linux technology also became part of the everyday lives of billions of people.
🌍 More Than an Operating System
For many of us, Linux is more than just an operating system.
It represents an idea:
Technology can be open, collaborative, and accessible to everyone.
The Linux ecosystem has also helped create and strengthen countless other open-source projects, distributions, tools, and technologies.
From Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch Linux, and openSUSE to technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and countless other open-source projects, the influence of Linux reaches far beyond the kernel itself.
💻 35 Years of Innovation
Thirty-five years later, Linux continues to evolve.
The systems running today’s cloud infrastructure are dramatically different from the machines available in 1991, yet the fundamental idea remains remarkably strong: an open project developed by a global community can become some of the most important infrastructure in the world.
For system administrators, developers, engineers, researchers, and technology enthusiasts, Linux has provided an incredible platform for learning, experimentation, automation, and innovation.
For me, as someone who works with Linux systems, servers, virtualization, networking, and open-source technologies, Linux is not simply software that I use every day.
It’s a technology ecosystem that has shaped an entire career.
