    On August 25, 1991, a young Finnish student named Linus Torvalds announced that he was working on a new, free operating system kernel. What started as a personal project would eventually become the foundation of an enormous ecosystem powering everything from servers and smartphones to supercomputers, cloud platforms, networking equipment, embedded devices, and countless other systems.
